The AATA’s mission is to advance art therapy as a regulated mental health profession and build a community that supports art therapists throughout their careers. As the nation’s leading non-profit organization for advancing the art therapy profession, the American Art Therapy Association provides members with the latest information, resources, and meaningful networking opportunities. The association advocates for the furtherance of the profession and connects members to the important work of art therapists around the world.

The ATCB is an independent organization, grants postgraduate registration (ATR) after reviewing documentation of completion of graduate education and post graduate supervised experience. The Registered Art Therapist who successfully completes the written examination administered by the ATCB is qualified as Board Certified (ATR-BC), a credential requiring maintenance through continuing education credits (CEUs).

How Can I Become and Art Therapist?

There are a variety of master level training programs in art therapy. In the United States there are approximately thirty Masters level programs and 5 Doctorial. The American Art Therapy Association (AATA) sets educational and credentialing standards for art therapy training programs and practicing professionals. Programs that are accredited have been approved by AATA. In addition, many of these programs offer a Post-Master’s Certification in Art Therapy after completing an M.A. in a related field. For a list of currently accredited programs visit the AATA Masters Academic Programs listing. For more information visit the AATA’s Becoming an Art Therapist page.
